Can We Be Trusted?
According to the latest National Leadership Index put out by the Harvard Kennedy School, 68% of Americans don’t trust or have confidence in leadership. It would be convenient and expedient to dismiss this as a measure of our frustration with politicians but this statistic is a measure of leadership in all sectors and at all levels. It is my belief that this is a result of a leadership model that has become pervasive over the past three decades that emphasizes profits at the exclusion and often the expense of humanity and the environment. People are not numbers and don’t trust organizations or leaders who
view them as liabilities and costs.
Leaders must have an overriding commitment to contributing beyond the bottom line. Money, and metrics ring hollow if not combined with meaning and purpose.
In the upcoming weeks I will begin a blogging series that explores trust in leadership; when did it get lost; how was it lost; how can we get it back.
As we all know, leadership without trust is ineffective.
I look forward to exploring this important issue with you and others.
